Artificial Grass

artificial turf

Artificial grass (sometimes called astro turf) is an ideal flooring solution for many applications including residential lawns, garden flooring, garden landscaping, playground flooring and dog runs. These synthetic products have several advantages over real turf in providing consumers with practical and affordable flooring.

Artificial Grass Suppliers

Most artificial grass suppliers have a range of synthetic products available to suit your budget. Economy turf is usually monotone with a short pile height and costs around £10 per square metre. Mid range turf is often dual tone with a longer pile height for more realism and comfort. Premium artificial turf can cost up to £40 per square metre. It has a moss infill and non-uniform pile height to closely imitate the appearance of natural grass. Consider asking your local artificial grass supplier for a selection of turf samples prior to making a purchase.

Residential Lawns

Many home owners are choosing to abandon mowing, seeding, fertilising, soil aeration, watering and weeding in favour of a no-maintenance artificial grass lawn. The only maintenance activities required by an artificial lawn are regular inspections and brushing. The time and energy saved by artificial lawns is causing an explosion of popularity, especially as people become ever more concerned about the environment. Power consumption is reduced due to not using a lawn mower or electric sprinkler system. Imagine the luxury of a perfectly green lawn all year round without having to spend any time on lawn care.

A traditional reason not to invest in an artificial lawn is the lack of realism but this is no longer an issue. The manufacturing improvements in recent years now provide a very realistic and comfortable alternative to natural turf.

Artificial grass was originally popularised by astro turf in 1966 for use in the sports industry. The technology has since changed dramatically to allow applications in other areas, especially for residential lawns. Modern astro turf is referred to as third generation turf because it has evolved into a more realistic and safer product. The turf is coated with silicone to provide a soft non-abrasive surface and the individual blades of grass are manufactured to imitate nature. An artificial lawn is now in many ways superior to real grass and home owners are enjoying the benefits.

From only a short distance, many people have commented that artificial grass looks real. The only exception to this is during extreme weather when your grass appears lush and green whilst the neighbours lawns are looking lifeless - many gardeners call it an unfair advantage!

Garden Flooring

Beyond the lawn, artificial grass can be used to surface almost any area of your garden. For instance, it provides an excellent decking cover because the wooden deck is protected by the turf thus increasing its lifespan. Patios, pathways and driveways can also benefit from artificial grass that is more aesthetically pleasing than alternative garden flooring like concrete or tarmac.

For patios and concrete, surface drainage has been an issue in many parts of the country as continuous heavy rainfall causes flooding when the water cannot drain away fast enough. Artificial grass alleviates this issue as the material is porous and allows water to simply soak through into the sub-base, which is often compacted sand. Remember that the sub base is important because sticking artificial grass directly to a non-porous base like concrete would leave you with the original problem.

Garden Landscaping

Large gardens are costly to maintain properly. If topiary, hedges, trees or plants occupy parts of the garden, it can take a lot of effort to mow the lawn around these obstacles. Artificial grass can be skilfully cut into any non-uniform shape to eradicate this arduous task.

An even greater challenge is to mow a lawn that sits on a steep gradient. This potentially dangerous job is no longer required after installing artificial grass. Furthermore, if you have to provide lawn care to a very large area, the installation of an artificial lawn will save time and money. Many public areas such as parks and walkways now use artificial turf for this very reason.

Playground Flooring

Shock padding (also called 'e-layer') is applied beneath artificial grass to cushion the surface on impact. This is an excellent safety precaution for kids play equipment such as climbing frames, swings or trampolines. Many schools and nurseries already use artificial grass with shock padding as their playground flooring of choice.

This application is not limited to school playground flooring but also provides a practical and affordable safety solution for kids play at home. If your garden has kids play equipment then consider using artificial grass to create the perfect soft play environment for your children. A range of shock padding is available to allow for critical fall heights of two metres and the padding can be applied to any turf product. Modern artificial grass is also non-abrasive so friction burns are no longer a concern if children fall in the garden.

Dog Runs

Dogs will often dig up the garden leaving the lawn in a bad state that is difficult to repair. Energetic dogs will also cause patchy grass if they run around the garden everyday because any lawn will become worn out after too much use.

Artificial grass is popular amongst dog owners simply because it does not wear out. Animals love the soft synthetic surface and owners all the more so on wet days when the dog walks into the house with clean paws and no more mud. Kennels can also benefit from artificial grass flooring as it looks great and is very easy to clean. Artificial grass is probably one of the best flooring solutions for your dog run.
